Former lawmaker Shehu Sani has issued a strong warning to Nigerians who have been speaking ill of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, urging them to let "the sleeping soul rest."
Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London, has received mixed reactions from Nigerians following his death, with some citizens criticizing his leadership legacy while others pay tribute to his service to the nation.
In a post on his Facebook page, Sani reminded critics of our shared mortality, stating: "We are all mortals awaiting an uncertain fate at uncertain time and uncertain places. A living man is still on trial and cannot judge the dead. Let the sleeping soul rest."
The former president's death has sparked significant debate across Nigeria. Popular activist Omoyele Sowore described Buhari's legacy as "one of repression, economic hardship, insecurity and religious bigotry," claiming he "left behind a terrible legacy" and was "a man whose rule both in uniform and civilian garb left deep scars on Nigeria's democratic fabric."
Some Nigerians have also expressed disappointment that a former president would die in a foreign country due to what they perceive as inadequate healthcare facilities in Nigeria.
However, many political leaders have offered tributes honoring the late president. Governor Bala Mohammed described Buhari's legacy as "indelible," while former Senate President David Mark called him an "uncommon patriot." Senator Wamakko referred to the former president as "a beacon of hope," and Kebbi's Governor Idris mourned him as "a statesman who served our great country."
Buhari's former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, also expressed gratitude to the late president, saying, "Thank you for your love, support for me."
The death of the former president continues to generate significant reactions across the political spectrum as Nigerians reflect on his eight-year civilian presidency from 2015 to 2023, as well as his earlier tenure as military head of state from 1983 to 1985.
