The Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) has commenced a comprehensive flood control operation in Asaba, the state capital, as part of its ongoing strategy to improve stormwater flow, reduce flooding risks, and enhance environmental sanitation.
The exercise includes desilting drainage systems, clearing overgrown vegetation, and evacuating accumulated silts and debris to government-approved dumpsites across the capital territory.
Mr. Patrick Ukah, Director-General of the DSCTDA, emphasized that the operation represents a critical component of the government's flood management and urban sanitation plan, describing it as a proactive measure to safeguard the community.
"This exercise is vital to safeguarding lives, property and public infrastructure. By ensuring our drains are cleared, we're reducing flood risks and improving environmental health across the capital territory," Ukah stated.
The Director-General urged residents to support the initiative by avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal into drainage systems and maintaining proper environmental practices that align with the government's efforts.
Mr. Isaac Nwosu, Head of Environment at the agency who is coordinating the field operations, expressed confidence in the project's success while highlighting the comprehensive approach being implemented.
"We are deploying teams across major areas to thoroughly desilt drains and evacuate debris to approved dump sites. It's a coordinated effort with strong community involvement," Nwosu explained.
The operation has brought together environmental health officers, sanitation workers, waste management contractors, and community volunteers, demonstrating a unified approach in addressing flooding and environmental degradation challenges in the state capital.
This initiative reinforces the Delta State Government's commitment, through the DSCTDA, to building a cleaner, flood-resilient, and sustainable capital territory that benefits all residents while protecting critical infrastructure from seasonal flooding that has previously affected parts of the city.
