In her reaction shared on social media, Okonjo-Iweala revealed she had been unaware of the severity of Buhari's illness until after his death was announced.
"Unbelievable! I did not know just how ill and minutes after sending my get well wishes I have just learned that he passed away," she wrote on X.
The WTO chief further expressed her condolences, stating: "I am so very sad. May the Soul of HE @MBuhari rest in perfect peace. My deepest condolences to the entire Buhari family and his close aides and associates."
Okonjo-Iweala also acknowledged the support she received from the former president during her current tenure at the WTO, noting: "I appreciate the support you gave me in my current position during your time in office. Wishing you the very best."
