President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a seven-day national mourning period following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

In a condolence message released on Sunday, President Tinubu directed that all national flags across Nigeria fly at half-mast for seven days as a mark of respect for the former leader.

"I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today," President Tinubu stated in the official announcement.

The President has also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session scheduled for Tuesday, which will be dedicated to honoring the late Buhari. Additionally, the federal government will accord the former president full state honors in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria.

"As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today. I have also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to his honour. The federal government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country," the statement further read.

According to reports, former President Buhari's remains are expected to be buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Monday.

BenriNews reports that Buhari's death was confirmed by his former spokespersons, Garba Shehu and Bashir Ahmed, in separate statements on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

In response to the former president's passing, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to London to accompany Buhari's remains back to Nigeria.

The death of the former president, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, marks the end of an era in Nigerian politics and has prompted tributes from across the political spectrum.
