The Kano State government has formally demanded compensation from the Federal Government for the cancellation of the traditional Durbar celebrations for two consecutive years, citing significant economic losses to the state.

Alhaji Tajo Uthman, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, made this demand on Sunday during the Sallah homage paid by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House.

UNESCO-Recognized Cultural Heritage

According to Commissioner Uthman, the Durbar celebrations are recognized by UNESCO as a heritage event that traditionally attracts both local and international tourists to Kano. The annual cultural festival serves as a significant revenue generator for the state's economy.

"The Federal Government must take responsibility for the economic impact of the cancellations and compensate the state accordingly," Uthman emphasized, noting that the financial impact has been substantial enough to affect the state's annual budget.

The economic impact of the cancellation has been significant enough to affect the state's annual budget.

The commissioner described the cancellations as regrettable and called for the immediate resumption of the Durbar celebrations, which have become an integral part of Kano's cultural identity and economic strategy.

Tourism and Economic Implications

The Durbar festival, a colorful horse parade that dates back centuries, has evolved into a major tourist attraction that brings visitors from across Nigeria and internationally. The event showcases Kano's rich cultural heritage while stimulating local businesses, hospitality services, and artisanal crafts.

With the cancellation for two consecutive years, hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and local markets have reportedly suffered significant losses, affecting the livelihoods of many residents who depend on the annual influx of tourists.

The state government's demand for compensation highlights the growing tension between federal decisions and their impact on local economies and cultural preservation efforts.

As of the time of reporting, the Federal Government has not issued an official response to Kano State's compensation demand.
