The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully prosecuted popular singer Hamisu Breaker and TikTok star Abubakar Ibrahim, known as G.fresh, for naira abuse in Kano State.
Both entertainers were arraigned before the Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice Sale Musa Shuaibu, where they pleaded guilty to the charges against them.
According to court documents, Hamisu Breaker was found guilty of spraying approximately ₦30,000 in ₦200 denomination notes at a party in Hadejia, Jigawa State, while G.fresh was convicted for spraying bundles of ₦1,000 notes during a shop opening celebration in the Tarauni area of Kano State.
After their guilty pleas, the court sentenced both entertainers to five months imprisonment with an option of a ₦200,000 fine each.
This case highlights the EFCC's ongoing crackdown on naira abuse, which has become increasingly common at social gatherings across Nigeria despite being prohibited under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007.
The law specifically forbids spraying, dancing on, or otherwise treating the naira with disrespect, as such actions are considered to diminish the dignity of Nigeria's currency.
Legal experts have noted that these prosecutions serve as a warning to other public figures and citizens who might engage in similar practices at events, particularly as the EFCC intensifies its enforcement efforts nationwide.
The conviction of these well-known entertainers is expected to send a strong message about the seriousness with which authorities view currency abuse, regardless of social status or popularity.
