The Ogun State Government has officially denied circulating rumors regarding the alleged renaming of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, stating categorically that the institution's name remains unchanged.
In an official statement released on Thursday by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, the government addressed speculation that the university had been renamed after the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.
"Tai Solarin University of Education has not been renamed. Governor Dapo Abiodun only referred to previous efforts made to honour the late monarch. He did not announce a name change for TASUED," the statement clarified.
The government emphasized that it had already honored the late Awujale in 2022 by naming the Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology in Omu after him, which appears to be the source of the confusion.
Historical Context of TASUED
The statement provided historical context about the institution, noting that what began as Ogun State College of Education in 1977 was renamed Tai Solarin College of Education in 1994, before eventually becoming Tai Solarin University of Education in 2005.
This transition created some administrative challenges with the National Universities Commission (NUC) regarding the institution's capacity to offer both NCE and degree programs simultaneously. To resolve this issue, the Tai Solarin College of Education was relocated to Omu, while TASUED remained at its Ijagun campus with its current name intact.
The government also pointed out that TASUED now falls under federal government jurisdiction, meaning any potential name change would require federal approval and would not be solely within the state government's authority.
"The governor only restated what had already been done in honour of Oba Sikiru Adetona. There was no announcement about renaming TASUED," the statement concluded.
This clarification comes amid recent developments regarding the institution, including the federal government's adoption of TASUED as a federal university, a move that has been welcomed by various stakeholders including the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
