Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has expressed profound sadness over the passing of legendary Nigerian folklorist and music icon, 'Gentleman' Mike Ejeagha, who died on Saturday at the age of 95.
In his tribute, Governor Mbah described the late musician as "a legend, a cultural ambassador and a revered son of Enugu State" whose death has created "a huge void that will be difficult to fill."
The governor, who had previously honored Ejeagha during his lifetime by reconstructing Obinagu Road and the adjoining Chief Mike Ejeagha Crescent leading to the musician's residence in Abakpa Nike, has assured that his administration will take further steps to immortalize the cultural icon.
A Cultural Legacy Beyond Boundaries
Popularly known for his signature "Gwo gwo gwo ngwo" sound, Ejeagha was celebrated for his unique ability to transform simple indigenous folktales into memorable songs that resonated across cultural boundaries.
"Ejeagha's immense talent and genius lay in how he took simple indigenous folktales and turned them into unforgettable songs that resonate across cultures," Governor Mbah noted in his tribute shared on his verified social media handles.
The governor further highlighted the musician's humble personality despite his celebrity status: "He was one of the finest musicians of his generation with an easygoing personality and humility that belied his towering celebrity status."
"I will always cherish fond memories of the time spent in his company – the warmth and wisdom he radiated; the joy he found in the ordinary," - Governor Peter Mbah
Government's Commitment to Honor the Legend
On behalf of the Enugu State government, Governor Mbah extended heartfelt condolences to the Ejeagha family and assured them of the government's support during this difficult time.
"As a government, we would ensure that his memory is duly immortalized," the governor promised, acknowledging that Ejeagha's death represents "a loss not only for his immediate family; it's a big loss for Enugu State, the entire music community, and the country as well."
The governor prayed that the family would experience "the comforting grace of God's love, and the fortitude to bear the loss."
Mike Ejeagha's musical career spanned decades, during which he established himself as one of Nigeria's most recognizable voices in traditional folk music, leaving behind a rich cultural legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
