Veteran Nigerian highlife legend Bright Chimezie has expressed delight after Afrobeats superstar Davido acknowledged drawing inspiration from him for his recent hit song.
Davido recently revealed that Chimezie's classic track "Because Of English" served as inspiration for his chart-topping collaboration "With You" featuring Omah Lay.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, Chimezie, who made a special cameo appearance in the music video for "With You" released this week, shared that he was initially unaware of the connection between the two songs until Davido personally informed him.
"Words cannot describe how I feel. I'm so delighted. I feel honoured. And I'm grateful to Davido for recognising that he drew inspiration from me," Chimezie stated.
The highlife maestro further explained, "I didn't even know that his song 'With You' was inspired by my song 'Because Of English'. He was the person who made me understand that. He put a call across to me and confessed that he was inspired by my song. The humility and everything, I feel so happy about it."
This intergenerational musical connection highlights the continuing influence of Nigeria's musical pioneers on contemporary Afrobeats stars. Chimezie, who recently signed a publishing deal with Sony Music, also mentioned that he is still actively creating music, noting that he and his contemporaries had deliberately stepped back to allow younger artists to flourish in the industry.
The collaboration between the two artists represents a significant bridge between Nigeria's rich musical heritage and its current global dominance in the music industry through Afrobeats.
