Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that leaders of the opposition coalition will rally behind whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Wednesday, Amaechi emphasized that the coalition leaders have agreed to support the ADC's flagbearer, provided the selection process is transparent.
"The moment anybody emerges from the primary, all of us will support; that's the agreement. We insist on a free and fair, transparent primary," he stated.
The former two-term governor of Rivers State also expressed concern about the economic situation in Nigeria, criticizing the current administration of President Bola Tinubu for the hunger and hardship facing citizens. He urged Rivers State residents to register with the ADC to help defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming elections.
Opposition Coalition Formation
The ADC has been adopted as the platform for the opposition coalition to challenge President Tinubu's re-election bid. The coalition includes several political heavyweights such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, both of whom were presidential candidates in the last election.
Other prominent members include former Senate President David Mark, who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the coalition, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
During the coalition's unveiling on July 2, Mark, who serves as the interim chairman, described the movement as an effort to preserve Nigeria's democracy and prevent the country from becoming a one-party state.
Amaechi, who was previously a chieftain of the APC, has become increasingly critical of the current administration, joining other opposition figures in their quest to present a united front against the ruling party in 2027.
