A prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Alwan Hassan, has declared that northern Nigeria will not support Peter Obi's presidential ambitions in 2027, citing the former Anambra governor's involvement in alcohol importation as incompatible with northern values.
Speaking during an interview on Channels TV's Politics Today programme on Tuesday, Hassan questioned Obi's appeal to northern voters while simultaneously being involved in the alcohol business.
"Who else do you think would defeat Asiwaju come 2027? Who? Peter Obi that was on your programme, saying he wants the north to support him and trust him. At the same time in the same programme, he's celebrating building breweries in Anambra State and being the biggest importer of alcohol, and he wants the north to vote for him? We'll vote for a president that will import alcohol in the north?" Hassan stated.
The APC chieftain expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu remains unbeatable in the upcoming 2027 presidential election, dismissing potential challengers including Peter Obi.
Hassan further criticized other opposition figures, stating, "Or is it those ones that are saying their wives are taking care of them. We cannot hand over this country to people, to men that are being fed by their wives."
The comments highlight growing political tensions as parties begin positioning for the 2027 presidential race, with the APC already rallying support for President Tinubu's potential second term bid.
This development comes as various APC chapters, including Kano State, have recently declared support for Tinubu's reelection while actively recruiting members from opposition groups.
Peter Obi, who ran under the Labour Party banner in the 2023 presidential election, has not officially declared intentions for 2027, though political observers note his continued visibility in national discourse suggests potential future ambitions.
