A founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prof. Jerry Gana, has stated that while Peter Obi may be a good candidate, the PDP has someone better positioned for the 2027 presidential election.

Gana, who has been vocal about wanting Obi to return to the PDP, paradoxically claimed that the former Anambra State Governor would win northern states if he contested under the PDP platform.

"The PDP is on the ground. I'm a researcher, and I research opinions. In the northern states, Peter Obi under the PDP will defeat any candidate because our people are very fair-minded and just," Gana said during an interview on Arise News.

Despite this assessment, Gana revealed he is leading a search team looking for presidential candidates. "We are reaching out to Peter Obi. Because I'm leading a search team and there are many brilliant people. Peter may be good, but we have somebody better. So, we are searching," he explained.

The PDP stalwart also criticized the party's 2023 strategy, suggesting that former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar missed an opportunity. "We made a mistake in 2023. If I were Atiku, I would say, 'Peter, it is now your turn; I would give you a vice-president,' but he didn't," Gana added.

Meanwhile, Jacob Mark, a former National Legal Adviser of the PDP, has stated that Obi is welcome to return to the party. Mark insisted that the PDP represents Obi's best chance to win the 2027 presidential election.

Obi, who left the PDP in May 2022 to pursue his presidential bid under the Labour Party, has maintained that he remains committed to the LP while working with the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition.

The development comes as political parties begin early positioning for the 2027 general elections, with the PDP seeking to strengthen its chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
