Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has claimed that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has lost his grip on opposition politics, suggesting he may not secure a position as Atiku Abubakar's running mate in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Adeyanju advised that Obi "should rush to church to give testimony" if Atiku considers him as a running mate, indicating the significant shift in political dynamics within Nigeria's opposition landscape.
"He no longer holds any vital card, the Northerner political actors now hold all the aces for 2027 as opposition politics while Tinubu controls the southern chess board," Adeyanju wrote, highlighting what he perceives as a regional power divide in Nigerian politics.
The activist further predicted that President Bola Tinubu would emerge victorious in the 2027 elections, distinguishing Tinubu's political approach from former presidents Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan.
"As of today, I see a Tinubu victory in 2027. And I'm not a prophet of doom ooo. Bola Tinubu is not Buhari or GEJ. The opposition needs to have a better plan," Adeyanju stated, referencing the recent Edo election as a lesson that the opposition has yet to learn from.
These comments come amid ongoing speculation about potential alliances and strategies for the 2027 presidential race, with various opposition figures positioning themselves for what promises to be a highly contested election.
The political landscape continues to evolve as both the ruling party and opposition groups prepare their strategies for the next general elections, with regional dynamics playing a crucial role in shaping potential alliances.
