A prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dan Ulasi, has publicly endorsed former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi's pledge to serve only one term if elected in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV on Tuesday, Ulasi defended Obi's controversial four-year term promise, describing the former Anambra State governor as a man of integrity whose word should be trusted.
"I believe Peter Obi's words are sincere. Unlike the usual crop of politicians in Nigeria, he is honest. The constitution guarantees only a 4-year term, which can be renewed by the people," Ulasi stated.
The PDP chieftain further emphasized that Obi's promise aligns with constitutional provisions and reflects his confidence in delivering meaningful governance within a single term. "Obi has not said anything out of the ordinary; he believes he can accomplish a great deal in those four years," he added.
BenriNews reports that Obi's one-term pledge has generated mixed reactions across Nigeria's political landscape. While supporters view it as a refreshing departure from career politicians, critics, including some government officials, have dismissed it as a desperate campaign strategy.
The Presidency recently criticized Obi's declaration, with a spokesperson reportedly describing him as a "liar" who shouldn't compare himself to historical figures like Nelson Mandela or Abraham Lincoln.
Similarly, media personality Reuben Abati characterized Obi's promise as a sign of desperation, while Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, questioned Obi's ability to secure votes in northern Nigeria.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has meanwhile cautioned political parties against premature election campaigns, as the 2027 general elections are still years away.
