Former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has alleged that certain political elements are mounting pressure on former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest in the upcoming 2027 presidential election against incumbent President Bola Tinubu.

Ahmad, in a post on his official X handle on Monday, claimed that those pushing for Jonathan's candidacy believe he would be easily marketable in the Northern region of Nigeria under the premise that he would only serve a single term if elected.

"From all indications, there are ongoing subtle moves by certain political elements trying to convince former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest again in 2027," Ahmad wrote.

"They calculate that his candidacy will be easy to market in the North under the guise that he would only serve a single term," he added.

Ahmad expressed concern that the push for Jonathan's candidacy appears to be motivated by political convenience and power rotation rather than substantive policy offerings for the North or the country at large.

"The troubling part is that this push is not rooted in what he would offer the North or the country at large, but merely in political convenience and power rotation. The North deserves more than being used as a political ladder," Ahmad stated.

Political analysts have suggested that Jonathan might be the only politician from the Southern region with enough political capital to potentially defeat President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential race.

The development comes amid growing political realignments as various stakeholders begin positioning for the next general elections. Jonathan, who served as Nigeria's president from 2010 to 2015, has maintained a relatively low profile in partisan politics since his defeat to former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

Neither Jonathan nor his representatives have made any official statement regarding these alleged overtures or his potential interest in contesting the 2027 presidential election.
