A prominent policy think tank within the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Progressive Research Initiative (PRI), has urged the ruling party to inject fresh leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement jointly signed by Dr. Ali Ahmed and Dr. Tersoo Aondona, the group expressed concerns over reports that veteran politicians Senator Tanko Al-Makura and Chief Barnabas Gemade are being considered for top party positions.
While acknowledging the past contributions of these political veterans, PRI emphasized that the party now requires leaders with contemporary ideas, renewed energy, and strong appeal to today's electorate, particularly younger voters.
"This is a critical moment for the APC. We need leaders who understand modern political trends, can unite the party, and inspire a new generation of Nigerians," the group stated in their release.
According to the think tank, both Al-Makura and Gemade may not embody the digital-savvy, youth-friendly leadership approach that the current political landscape demands. The group stressed that the party must evolve forward rather than revert to past leadership models.
PRI called on President Bola Tinubu and other key stakeholders to prioritize vision, competence, and innovation over political loyalty or historical achievements when selecting new party leaders.
The group warned that the 2027 elections would significantly test APC's internal cohesion and public perception, adding that appointing the right leadership could be decisive for the party's future.
"The APC must not look tired or out of touch. It must show Nigerians that it is ready for the future," the statement emphasized.
The think tank concluded by encouraging the ruling party to embrace renewal and avoid recycling established political figures, noting that Nigeria's political landscape is evolving rapidly, and the APC must adapt accordingly to remain relevant.
This call for fresh leadership comes amid growing discussions about the APC's strategy and positioning ahead of the next general elections, which will mark the end of President Tinubu's first term in office.
