The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa State has apprehended a 15-year-old boy, Ya'u Adamu, for allegedly killing a 19-year-old in a farmland dispute that turned violent.
NSCDC Jigawa State Commandant, Bala Bawa Bodinga, confirmed the arrest in an official statement released to BenriNews. The suspect, from Auno village in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area, faces charges of culpable homicide following the deadly altercation.
According to authorities, the incident occurred when Adamu discovered the deceased, Aliyu Barau, allowing his livestock to graze on Adamu's father's farmland. What began as a confrontation over the unauthorized grazing quickly escalated into violence.
The victim sustained serious internal injuries during the altercation and was subsequently rushed to Kafin Hausa General Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed his death.
Officials have transferred the case to the Jigawa State Police Command for comprehensive investigation and potential prosecution.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between farmers and herders in rural communities across northern Nigeria, where disputes over land use and grazing rights frequently lead to confrontations.
The case comes amid growing concerns about youth involvement in violent conflicts and raises questions about conflict resolution mechanisms in agricultural communities.
