The Nigerian Senate has announced plans to hold a special session on Wednesday in honor of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, focusing on his legacies and contributions to national development following his recent passing.

This announcement comes after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held its own special tribute session last week to honor the former president.

During the FEC tribute event on Thursday, President Bola Tinubu praised Buhari's leadership style, noting that he "led the country with restraint, governed with dignity and bore the burdens of leadership without complaint."

The late former President died in London on July 13 after a prolonged illness at the age of 82 years. He was laid to rest last week in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in a ceremony that attracted dignitaries from within Nigeria and across the globe.

Buhari holds the distinction of being Nigeria's second-longest-serving leader, having served as military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.

The Senate's special session is expected to provide an opportunity for lawmakers to reflect on Buhari's impact on Nigeria's political landscape and his contributions to the nation's development during his eight-year civilian presidency.

Meanwhile, the Buhari family has expressed appreciation for the outpouring of support and tributes from Nigerians following the former president's passing, noting that "All of Nigeria came out for Buhari."

Various political and religious leaders have also called for the immortalization of the late president in recognition of his service to the nation.
