The All Progressives Congress (APC) has established an early lead in Saturday's local government elections across Lagos State, as vote sorting and collation continue in the 57 local government areas and local council development areas.
Despite the elections proceeding peacefully, observers noted a significantly low voter turnout across numerous polling units throughout the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who participated in the electoral process at his polling unit in the Adeniji-Adele area, spoke with journalists after casting his ballot. He acknowledged that there were early logistical challenges that caused delays in some areas, which he attributed to movement restrictions.
As of 4:00 pm on election day, unofficial updates from various polling stations indicated that the APC was maintaining a substantial lead in multiple areas. The ruling party showed strong performance at the Governor's polling unit 006 at St. Stevens Nursery and Primary School, Adeniji-Adele.
Other areas where the APC demonstrated dominance include Yaba, Somolu, Bariga, Ikeja, and Agege. Preliminary results from these locations suggest that the party is ahead in both the chairmanship and councillorship races.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears to be trailing in second place, while the Labour Party (LP) is positioned third based on early results.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) is expected to announce the full official results once the collation process is completed across all local government areas.
In some areas, the election was not without incident. Reports emerged of a confrontation between APC loyalists and an LP agent at a polling unit in Ifako-Ijaiye, though details remain limited.
The Chief of Staff to Governor Sanwo-Olu, Mr. Ayinde, who also participated in the election, expressed confidence in the APC's victory prospects after casting his vote.
Meanwhile, the Lagos Commissioner of Police described the election as largely peaceful and devoid of major security breaches across the state.
