The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, participated in the local government elections on Saturday, casting his vote in a peaceful atmosphere at Polling Unit 019, Ward E, located on Oluwole Olaniyan Street in the Orile Agege area of Lagos State.
Upon arrival at the polling unit, Speaker Obasa briefly engaged with election officials and exchanged greetings with residents before proceeding to exercise his franchise in what observers described as a calm and orderly process.
Speaking to journalists after voting, Obasa expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the elections, particularly highlighting the absence of violence or disruptions at polling stations.
"So far, the process has been peaceful and devoid of any form of rancour. It's encouraging to see citizens turning out to perform their democratic duties," Obasa stated.
The Speaker commended the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for facilitating what he described as a seamless voting process, emphasizing that credible elections are fundamental to strengthening democratic governance in the state.
He further encouraged eligible voters who had not yet participated to come out and cast their ballots, stressing that electoral participation is both a civic right and responsibility.
"Voting is not only a civic right but also a duty. I urge every eligible resident to take part in this process," he emphasized.
Expressing confidence in the integrity of the electoral exercise, Obasa maintained that the outcome would reflect the true will of Lagos residents. He called for continued transparency, fairness, and adherence to due process throughout the election period.
The local government elections in Lagos State have attracted significant attention as they determine leadership at the grassroots level, which directly impacts community development and governance.
Meanwhile, Air Peace had earlier announced the suspension of Lagos flights for 12 hours on Saturday to accommodate the electoral process, highlighting the state-wide significance of the polls.
