The member representing Surulere 1 Constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot, has emphasized that citizens who abstain from voting should not expect government assistance afterward.

Speaking after casting his vote at Onitolo Nursery/Primary School, Unit 009, in Surulere on Saturday, Elliot stated, "You can't sit at home and later come to seek help from people who sacrificed to vote others into power."

The lawmaker's comments came during the ongoing Lagos State local government elections for chairmanship and councillorship positions across all 20 local government areas and 37 local development council areas.

Elliot, who transitioned from a successful Nollywood career to politics, observed that voter turnout was relatively low but expressed optimism that participation would increase throughout the day.

"Development begins at the grassroots level. With powers and revenue now devolved to local governments, this election holds significant importance," he explained.

The lawmaker emphasized that local government elections should attract greater participation than presidential polls due to their direct impact on citizens' daily lives. He noted that the outcome would directly affect residents, making it essential for voters to choose leaders who prioritize community needs and development.

Elliot also advocated for increased public discourse regarding local government responsibilities, highlighting their crucial role in primary healthcare delivery, market management, and maintenance of inner roads.

The Lagos local government elections represent a critical opportunity for citizens to influence governance at the community level, where decisions most directly impact their everyday experiences.
