Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, has declared that the PDP will continue to lose elections in Lagos due to its weak grassroots structure.
Adediran made this statement on Saturday after casting his vote during the Lagos State local government elections at Polling Unit 001, Ward D, Irewe, a riverine community in the Ojo area of the state.
Having recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Jandor emphasized that for the PDP to have any chance of winning in Lagos and displacing the APC, the party would need to significantly strengthen its presence at the grassroots level.
"While in the PDP we came with fresh ideas and we did our best, but could not make headway because PDP as a party is rarely known at the grassroots," Jandor explained.
The former gubernatorial candidate further highlighted the stark contrast between the two parties' local presence, stating: "APC as a party in Lagos State has over the years built strong grassroots structures. The party is a household name in every community."
Jandor expressed skepticism about any party's ability to displace the APC in Lagos, either now or in the future, citing this as a key reason for his defection. "Based on this, people like us, with host of followers, joined the train to build on the legacies of previous leaders rather than stay in opposition," he added.
The local government elections in Lagos have historically been dominated by the APC, with opposition parties struggling to gain significant footholds in the state's 57 local government areas and local council development areas.
Jandor's comments come at a critical time as political parties begin preparations for future electoral contests in Nigeria's commercial capital.
