A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi, has dismissed the newly formed opposition coalition, stating that it has no hope of survival due to inevitable internal conflicts.
The coalition, formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), brings together several political heavyweights with the aim of unseating President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.
Speaking on Channels Television, Sowunmi, who recently met with President Tinubu and appears to have softened his stance toward the administration, predicted that the coalition would eventually collapse due to competing ambitions.
"They will quarrel among themselves over everything," Sowunmi stated. "Everybody in that coalition suddenly wants to be president all at time, and they will not be able to agree."
The coalition has attracted prominent political figures including former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Senate President David Mark, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.
Notably, Amaechi, Obi, and Atiku have all expressed interest in contesting the ADC presidential primary election, setting the stage for what could be a contentious nomination process.
The formation of this coalition represents a significant realignment in Nigerian politics as opposition figures unite in their bid to challenge the current administration. However, Sowunmi's comments highlight the potential challenges facing the group as they work to present a united front.
Political analysts note that successful coalitions require clear leadership structures and consensus-building mechanisms to navigate competing interests and ambitions.
