Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, former Borno State governor, has claimed that Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi is preparing to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a Channels TV interview on Monday, Sheriff stated that based on information available to him, Obi's return to the PDP is imminent.
"The information available to me is that at any moment from now Peter Obi will go back to PDP and run as a presidential candidate under PDP," Sheriff revealed.
Obi had left the PDP in 2022 to secure the Labour Party's presidential ticket for the 2023 general elections. He is currently part of an opposition coalition that recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
However, Sheriff dismissed the viability of the ADC as a political force, predicting its imminent collapse.
"As far as this politics is concerned, ADC doesn't exist. Give the party three months and it will die down," he stated.
Political analysts suggest that presidential ambitions among coalition members, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, may be creating tensions that could prompt Obi to reconsider his political alignment.
Sheriff also expressed confidence that the ruling party would retain power in 2027, citing its established political structures across the country.
Neither Peter Obi nor his representatives have responded to these claims at the time of reporting.
The 2027 presidential race continues to take shape as opposition figures position themselves to challenge the incumbent administration.
