Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has been released by South African club, Marumo Gallants, as part of a major squad overhaul ahead of the upcoming season.
The 38-year-old veteran shot-stopper is among nine players who have been shown the exit door by the Siwelele Sa Marumo management. Akpeyi joined the club just last summer on a free transfer but managed only seven league appearances during the 2024/25 campaign.
Career Crossroads for Experienced Goalkeeper
Akpeyi's release raises questions about his future in professional football. At 38, the goalkeeper now faces a decision to either seek opportunities with another club or potentially bring his playing career to a close.
The Nigerian international has spent his entire professional career in South Africa, previously representing Chippa United, Kaizer Chiefs, and Moroka Swallows before his brief stint with Marumo Gallants.
Akpeyi, who represented Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and was part of the Super Eagles squad that finished third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, has been a notable presence in South African football for several years.
Meanwhile, in related transfer news, Remo Stars are reportedly plotting a move for Rangers defender Onyebuchi, as clubs across the continent begin their preparations for the new season.
