Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers is on the verge of sealing a move to Greek giants AEK Athens after verbally agreeing to a lucrative contract offer from the 13-time Greek Super League champions.
According to reports, the Nigerian international has been offered a £30,000-a-week deal by AEK Athens, who have renewed their interest in the striker after a failed attempt to sign him in January.
The Yellow and Reds' pursuit of Dessers has been significantly boosted by the financial backing of their new owner, shipping magnate Marios Iliopoulos. The club is now prepared to meet Rangers' valuation with a £5m bid for the 30-year-old striker.
Impressive Scottish Premiership Performance
Dessers joined Rangers two years ago from Italian club Cremonese in a deal worth £4.5m. The move to AEK Athens would represent a small profit for the Scottish club on their initial investment.
The Nigerian striker has been a standout performer for Rangers, finishing as the top scorer in the Scottish Premiership last season with an impressive tally of 18 goals. His contribution extended beyond league play, with an additional 11 goals across European and domestic cup competitions, bringing his total to 29 goals in all competitions.
Dessers' potential departure would leave a significant gap in Rangers' attacking options, given his consistent goal-scoring record during his time at the club.
AEK Athens' Renewed Interest
AEK Athens, managed by Marko Nikolic, previously attempted to secure Dessers' services during the January transfer window but were unable to meet Rangers' valuation at that time. The financial injection from their new ownership has now made the transfer feasible.
The move would see Dessers join one of Greece's most successful clubs, with AEK Athens looking to strengthen their squad for domestic and European competitions.
For the Nigerian international, the transfer represents an opportunity to experience a new league and potentially European football with the Greek giants, while also securing a significant salary package.
The deal is expected to be finalized in the coming days, subject to personal terms being fully agreed and a medical examination.
