Nigerian football stars Daniel Amokachi and Alex Iwobi have earned their place in Everton history as their goals were selected among the 60 greatest strikes ever scored at the iconic Goodison Park stadium.
The recognition comes as Everton FC prepares to bid farewell to their historic home ground after 133 years, with the club set to relocate to the new Hill Dickinson Stadium from next season.
Nigerian Stars in Everton's Hall of Fame
Amokachi's thunderous strike against Newcastle United in April 1995 was highlighted in the commemorative compilation. The powerful forward, nicknamed "The Bull," was a fan favorite during his time with the Toffees, contributing significantly to their FA Cup triumph that same year.
Similarly, Alex Iwobi's dramatic goal against the same opposition in March 2022 also made the prestigious list. Iwobi's inclusion recognizes the continued Nigerian influence at the Merseyside club over the decades.
Interestingly, another former Super Eagles forward, Victor Anichebe, missed out on the selection despite scoring 25 goals during his tenure at the club.
End of an Era at Goodison Park
Goodison Park has been Everton's home since 1892, making it one of the oldest purpose-built football stadiums in the world. The move to the new Hill Dickinson Stadium marks a significant transition in the club's storied history.
The compilation of greatest goals serves as a fitting tribute to the memories created at the ground, with Nigerian talents featuring prominently in this celebration of the stadium's rich heritage.
For Nigerian football fans, the inclusion of Amokachi and Iwobi in this prestigious list highlights the significant contributions of Nigerian players to European football, particularly in the English Premier League.
