Former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has expressed frustration over top European clubs backing away from signing Victor Osimhen from Napoli due to his wage demands.
Ideye, who won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria, took to his X account on Sunday to voice his concerns about Osimhen's transfer situation, suggesting that Europe's elite clubs should be able to afford the striker's reported €400,000 weekly salary.
"I don't think the top 5 clubs in Europe can't pay [euros] 350 or 400k a week for a player like him," Ideye wrote. "When players that are not on his level earn the same amount. Had to be some other issue we all don't know about for sure."
Osimhen, 26, spent last season on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, where he made a significant impact by scoring 37 goals and providing eight assists across all competitions. His impressive performances helped the Turkish giants secure both the domestic league title and the Turkish Cup.
European Interest Wanes as Saudi Club Emerges as Frontrunner
Despite attracting interest from several European powerhouses including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Juventus, these clubs have reportedly stepped back from negotiations due to Osimhen's salary expectations.
This development has paved the way for Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal to emerge as the leading contender for the Nigerian international's signature. According to Turkish football expert Ertem Şener, Osimhen is now leaning toward a move to the Middle East, primarily motivated by the prospect of higher earnings.
Reports suggest that Al Hilal has already made significant progress in securing Osimhen's services, with arrangements for travel and medical examinations allegedly underway following an agreement on a €75 million transfer fee.
The potential move to Saudi Arabia represents a significant shift in Osimhen's career trajectory, as many football observers had expected him to continue his development at one of Europe's top clubs following his successful stint in Turkey.
