The death toll from the devastating flood that swept through Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has climbed to 115, according to officials.
Ibrahim Hussaini, Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the updated figures on Thursday while speaking on behalf of the agency's Director General, Ibrahim Baba Arah.
"Contrary to what is being circulated on social media, we have recovered 115 bodies so far," Hussaini stated. He emphasized that search and rescue operations remain ongoing in the affected communities.
Ongoing Recovery Efforts
NSEMA's search and rescue teams continue to work diligently in the flood-ravaged areas, with the possibility that the death toll may rise further as operations progress. The agency has not yet released details about the number of people still missing or the full extent of property damage.
The flooding, which occurred in the Mokwa Local Government Area, has devastated the communities of Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa, leaving many residents displaced and infrastructure severely damaged.
This disaster comes amid a series of water-related tragedies in Niger State in recent times, including boat mishaps that have claimed numerous lives. The state, which hosts several major water bodies, has been particularly vulnerable to flooding and water-related accidents.
Local authorities have yet to announce comprehensive relief measures for survivors and affected families, though emergency response efforts remain the immediate priority as search operations continue.
BenriNews will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available from NSEMA and other official sources.
