The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has announced its commitment to support victims of the devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State, which reportedly claimed approximately 200 lives.

In a statement released on Friday and signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association called on churches and Christians nationwide to provide assistance to those affected by the disaster.

"We urge churches and Christians to support those in need with food, clothes, money, or by offering prayers and kind words," Archbishop Okoh stated.

The CAN leader emphasized that the association would collaborate with government agencies and other organizations to ensure aid reaches those most affected by the catastrophe.

CAN Extends Eid-el-Kabir Greetings

In the same statement, Archbishop Okoh extended warm felicitations to Muslims across Nigeria on the occasion of Eid-el-Kabir 2025.

"On behalf of the national leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria, I extend warm greetings to all our Muslim brothers and sisters as you celebrate Eid-el-Kabir 2025," he said.

This special festival, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, reminds us of the faith and obedience shown by Abraham (Prophet Ibrahim). It teaches us about sacrifice, love, and kindness—values shared by Christians and Muslims alike.

The CAN President described Eid-el-Kabir as a time for family gathering, sharing meals, and caring for one another, emphasizing that it presents an opportunity for Nigerians to demonstrate peace and respect regardless of faith differences.

Mokwa Flood Situation

The Mokwa flood has drawn national attention, with the federal government recently approving N2 billion for the resettlement of victims. Reports from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) indicate that some victims have been reluctant to relocate to designated relief camps.

Various organizations, including Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), have called on the government to declare an environmental emergency and adopt more proactive measures in addressing the disaster.
