Former Nigerian Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) has extended his sympathies to the people of Mokwa and Niger State following the devastating flood that recently struck the local government area, describing the incident as an act of God.

IBB made these remarks when he received a delegation led by Niger State Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, who paid him a Sallah homage at his hilltop residence in Minna.

"What happened in Mokwa was unfortunate and it was ordained by Allah. I enjoin residents of the state to continue to pray for the souls of the deceased," the elder statesman stated.

The former military leader also commended Governor Umaru Bago's administration for its developmental efforts across Niger State and emphasized the need for sustained progress. He assured the delegation of his continued support for the state government's initiatives.

Earlier during the visit, Deputy Governor Garba explained that the delegation sought IBB's blessings and fatherly advice for the state. "This government is well aware that you are disturbed by the recent incident in Mokwa and we appreciate you for your fatherly role at all times," Garba noted.

The Mokwa flood has drawn significant attention across Nigeria, with various organizations including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) urging Nigerians to remember the victims. Reports indicate that the federal government has approved N2 billion for the resettlement of those affected by the disaster.

According to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), some victims have been reluctant to relocate to designated relief camps despite the severity of the situation.

Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) has also called on the Nigerian government to declare an environmental emergency and take proactive measures to prevent similar disasters in the future.
