The Kano State Government has welcomed Friday's Court of Appeal verdict that affirmed the legality of the October 2024 local government elections, describing the ruling as a significant victory for democratic governance in the state.
In a statement issued by the State Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the government expressed satisfaction that the court's decision has proven the legitimacy of the local government polls "beyond reasonable doubts."
"This judgment affirms our unwavering belief in the judiciary as the last hope of the common man, a critical pillar of democratic governance, and protector of constitutional integrity," the statement read.
Court Overturns Previous Ruling
The Court of Appeal's decision reversed an earlier ruling that had favored the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who had challenged the credibility of the elections conducted by the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).
The petitioners had accused KANSIEC Chairman, Sani Lawan Malumfashi, of bias, claiming he was a card-carrying member of the APC. However, the appellate court dismissed these allegations in its Friday ruling.
According to Commissioner Waiya, the verdict will now allow elected local government officials to "face their work squarely" while upholding constitutional order in the state.
Implications for Local Governance
The government emphasized that the ruling represents a crucial step in strengthening democratic institutions at the grassroots level. The commissioner commended Kano residents for their patience and resilience throughout the legal proceedings.
While the state government celebrates this legal victory, reports indicate that the APC is considering an appeal to the Supreme Court, signaling that the legal battle over the local government elections may not be over.
The October 2024 local government elections have been a contentious issue in Kano's political landscape, with opposition parties questioning the process and outcome of the polls conducted under the current administration.
