The Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission (TSIEC) has officially announced the schedule for the 2025 local government elections, confirming that the tenure of current local government chairmen will conclude in November.

Dr. Philip Duwe, Executive Chairman of TSIEC, made this announcement on Wednesday during a stakeholders' meeting at the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Conference Hall in Jalingo. The Commission also issued a formal notice marking the commencement of preparations for the upcoming elections.

Two-Year Tenure Confirmation

Duwe reaffirmed that under existing state laws, elected local government chairmen serve a two-year term, which for the current officeholders will expire in November 2025. He assured stakeholders of TSIEC's readiness to deliver a credible electoral process.

"Local government council elections are essential for strengthening democracy at the grassroots. We have established the necessary frameworks to ensure free, fair, and transparent polls," Duwe stated.

Guidelines and Requirements

The TSIEC chairman announced that election guidelines would soon be made public. He also advised civil servants planning to contest in the elections to resign at least 90 days before the polls, in compliance with electoral regulations.

Duwe commended Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas for implementing reforms aimed at strengthening grassroots governance, describing these initiatives as "timely and progressive."

During the meeting, representatives of political parties and civil society groups emphasized the importance of internal democracy and urged party leaders to allow voters to freely elect candidates of their choice.

The announcement sets the stage for what will be a crucial democratic exercise at the local government level in Taraba State, with preparations expected to intensify in the coming months.
