Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party's deviation from its founding principles as the reason for his departure.

In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman of his Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku described the decision as "heartbreaking" given his status as a founding father of the party.

"I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect," Atiku stated in the letter. "I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for."

The former Vice President, who served two terms and was twice the party's presidential candidate, expressed gratitude for the opportunities afforded him by the PDP but maintained that "irreconcilable differences" had emerged, necessitating his exit.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Atiku is currently a key member of the opposition coalition, suggesting this move may be part of a broader political realignment ahead of future electoral contests.

The resignation marks a significant shift in Nigeria's political landscape, as Atiku has been one of the most prominent figures in the PDP since its inception. Political analysts suggest this development could potentially reshape opposition politics in the country.

In his parting words, Atiku wished "the Party and its leadership all the best in the future," while acknowledging the difficult nature of his decision.

The PDP has yet to issue an official response to Atiku's resignation.
