Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo and his club Al Wehda have been relegated from the Saudi Pro League following a 2-1 defeat to Al Ettifaq in their final fixture of the 2024/25 season.
Al Wehda entered the crucial match needing a victory to preserve their top-flight status but failed to secure the necessary three points despite a valiant effort. The defeat confirmed their 16th-place finish in the league with 33 points, condemning them to play in the Saudi Arabian Division 1 next season.
Abdullah Radif gave Al Ettifaq the lead just before halftime in the 45th minute. Al Wehda managed to equalize through Jawad El Yamiq in the 70th minute, offering a glimmer of hope for survival. However, their efforts were ultimately in vain as they conceded a devastating stoppage-time goal that sealed their fate.
Ighalo, who has contributed six goals and two assists for Al Wehda this season, was unable to find the back of the net in this crucial encounter. Had Al Wehda secured a win, they would have leapfrogged Al Okhdood, who finished the season in 15th place, thus avoiding relegation.
The former Manchester United striker joined Al Wehda after previous stints with other Saudi clubs and has been one of the team's standout performers despite their struggles throughout the season.
This relegation marks a significant setback for both Ighalo and Al Wehda, who will now face the challenge of competing in the Saudi Arabian second division next season with hopes of making an immediate return to the top flight.
