Human rights activist and government critic, Hamdiyya Sidi Sharif, who was declared missing since Tuesday morning in Sokoto, has been found in critical condition at Bakura Hospital in Zamfara State.
According to her lawyer, Barrister Abba Hikima, who confirmed the development in a Facebook post, Hamdiyya is currently under the watch of security personnel at the hospital. Hikima stated that the circumstances surrounding her discovery strongly suggest she was abducted, given the dire condition in which she was found.
"It is evident she was abducted, considering the dire condition in which she was found," Hikima noted in his statement.
Hamdiyya was last seen after she left to purchase food items in Sokoto town. All efforts to locate her whereabouts had been unsuccessful until her discovery at the Zamfara hospital.
The lawyer has called on the Zamfara State government and security agencies to ensure Hamdiyya's safety and conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and current condition.
This incident comes amid reports that Hamdiyya had recently criticized the Sokoto State Governor, and occurs against the backdrop of ongoing security challenges across Northwestern Nigeria.
Security agencies have yet to release an official statement regarding the circumstances of her disappearance or how she ended up in a hospital in neighboring Zamfara State.
The case has raised concerns among human rights organizations about the safety of government critics and activists in the region.
