A tragic canoe accident has claimed the lives of seven people in Sokoto State on Monday, according to security reports.

The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. while the victims were traveling from Gidan Hussaini to Sabon Garin Hussaini. The canoe capsized during the journey, resulting in the drowning of all seven passengers, including the paddler.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama shared details of the tragedy on Tuesday through a post on social media platform X.

Following the accident, security operatives were promptly dispatched to the scene. They cordoned off the riverside area to manage the growing crowd and prevent an influx of distraught family members.

A local rescue team successfully recovered all seven bodies from the water. The remains were subsequently handed over to the victims' families for burial according to local customs.

This incident highlights the ongoing safety concerns regarding water transportation in Nigeria's rural communities, where canoes remain a common means of travel across rivers and waterways.

Authorities have yet to release the identities of the victims or provide further details about the circumstances that led to the capsizing.
