The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully neutralized over 20 armed terrorists and destroyed more than 21 motorcycles during an air interdiction operation in Zamfara State, preventing what intelligence sources described as a planned large-scale attack on vulnerable communities.

According to a statement released by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF headquarters, the operation was conducted in the general area south of Mai-Galma in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Intelligence reports had indicated that a significant number of terrorists were gathering and preparing to attack unsuspecting settlements in the region. The reports further confirmed that the bandits had already killed some farmers and abducted several civilians, including women and children, prior to the NAF intervention.

"Further intelligence confirmed that the bandits had killed some farmers and abducted a number of civilians, including women and children. Consequently, NAF aircraft under Operation FANSAN YAMMA was immediately dispatched on armed reconnaissance and possible rescue mission," the statement explained.

During the operation, NAF personnel observed over 30 motorcycles carrying armed terrorists heading into a nearby forest. Upon sighting the military aircraft, the terrorists reportedly opened fire, prompting a precision engagement by the NAF that led to the destruction of several motorcycles and the neutralization of dozens of terrorists.

Ground forces were subsequently mobilized to assess the situation, confirming the destruction of enemy assets and the neutralization of over 20 terrorists. However, the operation was not without casualties on the civilian side, as two local vigilantes lost their lives and two others sustained injuries in the crossfire.

This operation represents another significant effort in the ongoing campaign against banditry and terrorism in Nigeria's northwestern region, where armed groups have continued to terrorize local communities through killings, kidnappings, and destruction of property.

The NAF continues to work alongside other security agencies to restore peace and security to affected communities in Zamfara and neighboring states that have been plagued by insecurity in recent years.
