Ekiti State has opened its medal account at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as weightlifter Abayomi Adeleye secured a bronze medal in the 55kg category on Monday.
The achievement marks Ekiti's first appearance on the medal table at the Gateway Games 2025, which is currently in its fifth day of competition across various venues in Ogun State.
Speaking after his podium finish, Adeleye expressed pride in his accomplishment and hoped it would inspire his teammates to deliver more medals for Ekiti State in their respective events.
Dr. Olusola Osetoba, Technical Advisor to Governor Biodun Oyebanji on Sports Development, praised the weightlifter's performance, describing it as a promising start for the state's campaign at the festival.
"This bronze medal is a positive sign," Dr. Osetoba stated. "It proves that Ekiti is not in Ogun State just to participate but to compete seriously. I urge all our athletes to take inspiration from Adeleye and aim for podium finishes in their events."
She further assured that the state government would continue to provide support and motivation for the athletes to excel in their respective competitions.
The Ekiti State contingent had participated in the festival's opening ceremony held at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta on Sunday, joining other states in the colorful parade that officially kicked off the national sporting event.
As the National Sports Festival progresses, Ekiti's athletes in other sports disciplines will be looking to add to the state's medal tally and improve their overall standing in the competition.
