Tragedy struck along the Ijebu-Ode–Ibadan Expressway as 10 people lost their lives when an 18-seater bus plunged off the Omu bridge at Awa on Friday night. The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) confirmed that three other passengers sustained severe injuries in the accident that occurred around 8:30 p.m.
According to TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the incident on Saturday, the bus was carrying 15 passengers at the time of the crash. Among the deceased were three women and seven men, while two people—a toddler and an adult—miraculously escaped unhurt.
Excessive Speed Blamed for Tragic Crash
Akinbiyi attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speed. "15 persons were involved in the crash. Sadly, 10 of them – three women and seven men – were confirmed dead at the scene, while three others suffered injuries. Two persons, including a toddler and an adult, escaped the crash unhurt," he stated.
The TRACE spokesperson further revealed that the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital morgue, while the injured passengers were taken to the same facility for treatment.
In his statement, Akinbiyi issued a stern warning to motorists against overtaking and night travel, emphasizing that such reckless behavior continues to claim lives on highways across the state.
This tragic incident comes as the Ogun State Police also announced plans to crack down on any planned cult-related activities in connection with the so-called "777 anniversary" in the state.
Road safety experts continue to advocate for stricter enforcement of speed limits and increased awareness campaigns to reduce the alarming rate of fatal accidents on Nigerian highways.
