Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji has issued a two-week ultimatum to roadside traders in Ado-Ekiti to relocate to the newly completed ultra-modern Agric Olope Market or face legal consequences.

The directive, given on Thursday during a meeting with market women at the Palace of Ewi of Ado Ekiti, affects traders operating at Bisi Market, Kings Market, and other unauthorized roadside spaces in the state capital. All affected traders must relocate by June 23, 2025.

Modern Facilities for Traders

Governor Oyebanji emphasized that the new market has been equipped with comprehensive facilities designed to enhance trading activities. These include water supply, modern toilets, good road networks, security infrastructure, warehouses, and solar lighting for night trading.

"The market was built to their taste. We met with them and they told us what they wanted, and we have done it. We have provided water, toilet, security, warehouses, parking space, and other things to make them comfortable," the governor stated.

Safety Concerns and Urban Development

The governor highlighted that street trading poses significant health and safety hazards. He stressed the importance of Ado-Ekiti as the state capital and the need for proper urban planning to support economic and infrastructural development.

"We are in democracy and democracy requires consultation. We don't want to use force on those that brought us to office, and I am happy that we were able to reach a consensus," Oyebanji said, noting that the traders have promised to move voluntarily.

Enforcement and Compliance

Regarding potential defaulters, the governor was clear: "I don't expect anybody to default, but within a group of people, there are some that will not want to align with us. We will enforce the agreement reached here today that they have to stop street trading. It is not healthy, it is not safe, and they don't even get to make money."

Mrs. Tayo Adeola, Commissioner for Trade, Industry, Investment, and Cooperatives, commended Governor Oyebanji for his visionary leadership in completing the market. She announced that traders can begin obtaining forms for shop allocation starting next Tuesday.

The governor's initiative aims to transform Ado-Ekiti into a smart and modern city while ensuring traders have a conducive environment for their businesses.
