The vibrant Ojude Oba Festival, one of Nigeria's most prestigious cultural celebrations, is set to dazzle visitors in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State on Sunday, June 8, 2025. Held traditionally on the third day after Eid-el-Kabir, this magnificent festival promises an unparalleled display of Ijebu culture, fashion, and entertainment.

Ojude Oba, which literally means "The King's Forecourt," stands out as Nigeria's most elegant cultural festival. Unlike any other celebration in the country, it features elaborate parades by various groups including the Regberegbes (age grades of Ijebu sons and daughters), horse riders, and cultural troupes, all paying homage to the Awujale, the paramount ruler of the Ijebu Kingdom.
What sets Ojude Oba apart is its unmatched display of royal couture and fashion. From traditional aso oke, sanyan, and alaari to modern damask, lace, and cashmere, the festival showcases the finest fabrics adorned by participants. Men sport elegant fila (caps) while women dazzle with their elaborate gele skontolo (headgear), all exuding the pride and elegance characteristic of the Ijebu people.
Festival Highlights and Venues
The celebrations take place across multiple venues, including the Ojude Oba Pavilion, the exclusive "Glass House" arena where the wealthiest participants showcase their splendor, and the main arena where the Regberegbe groups gather. The center stage, occupied by the Awujale of Ijebuland along with dignitaries and guests, serves as the focal point of the festivities.
Beyond the visual spectacle, Ojude Oba represents a profound cultural tradition where Ijebus from all walks of life converge to pay obeisance to their monarch, affirming his authority and pledging their loyalty. All Ijebu obas and their subjects attend this grand occasion, making it a true celebration of Ijebu unity and heritage.
Government Support and Sponsorship
The Ogun State government, under Governor Dapo Abiodun, actively supports the festival. At last year's celebration, Governor Abiodun emphasized the importance of Ojude Oba as both a cultural heritage and a significant tourism attraction that showcases Ijebu hospitality to national and global audiences.
"Ojude Oba festival is not only a cultural heritage for the indigenes of Ijebuland, it has now become a significant event that attracts local and foreign tourists to Ogun State," the governor stated. "Our administration is deeply committed to supporting the initiative to make it a permanent event in the global tourism industry."
Corporate Sponsorship and Special Attractions
Major corporate sponsors have lined up to support the 2025 festival. FCMB, which has backed the event for nearly 25 years, continues its sponsorship in line with the vision of its late founder, Otunba Olasubomi Balogun, who believed in the role of culture in enterprise development and community advancement.
Globacom, the main sponsor for the past 25 years, has planned a magnificent cultural show, entertainment, and customer rewards. Festival attendees can look forward to winning prizes including two brand-new Suzuki Celerio cars, four tricycles, five generators, and ten grinding machines.
A special highlight this year will be a metal horse sculpture by Yusuf Dongo, an Ijebu Ode-born young sculptor. The masterpiece, which took three years to complete, pays tribute to the history and traditions of Ijebuland.
"Ojude Oba is the perfect platform to exhibit this masterpiece," Dongo explained. "I want both indigenes and non-indigenes to connect with the rich culture, tradition, and history of Ijebu through my work."
Additionally, "An Evening with Glo" featuring Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi and Musiliu Isola will take place on Thursday, June 6, as part of the pre-festival celebrations.
