Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) in Kano has ordered female students to immediately vacate two privately-run hostels following serious security threats and moral concerns.

The university administration on Sunday announced the withdrawal of approval for Al-Ansar Indabo Female Students Hostels, citing multiple violations of operational guidelines and standards.

Dr. Hamza Garba, Vice President Campus Life at MAAUN, issued a statement explaining that the decision was taken to protect students' wellbeing and uphold the institution's zero-tolerance policy on misconduct.

"I am directed by the Management to write, inform and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents/students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo Female Students Hostels," the statement read.

According to the university management, the hostels were found to be hosting "immoral activities" alongside numerous operational deficiencies including insufficient water and power supply, student violence, unauthorized late-night movements, and the presence of unknown tenants sharing facilities with students.

"These developments pose a serious threat to the wellbeing of our students," Dr. Garba emphasized in the statement.

The affected students have been instructed to vacate the premises immediately after completing their fall semester examinations. The university has advised parents and students to seek accommodation only through officially approved hostels listed by the Office of the Vice President Campus Life.

MAAUN management warned that it would not be held responsible for any incidents resulting from non-compliance with this directive. The statement also revealed that the university is collaborating with relevant security agencies to ensure full compliance with the closure order.

This development highlights growing concerns about student accommodation standards and safety in private universities across Nigeria, where off-campus housing often operates with limited oversight.
