Students of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, took to the streets on Monday, blocking the Agaie–Lapai highway to protest the killing of a fellow student during a suspected robbery incident.
The victim, identified as Jafar, a 200-level student and only child of his parents, was stabbed in the neck when armed robbers invaded his off-campus lodge in the Ndakikpabu area around 2:30 a.m. He was rushed to the General Hospital in Lapai, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.
Rising Insecurity Concerns
The tragic incident has sparked outrage across the university community, with students expressing deep concerns over persistent insecurity around off-campus accommodations.
"The death of Jafar is one too many. We live in fear every night. We want the government and school authorities to act immediately," a protesting student told reporters during the demonstration.
Police Response
SP Wasiu Abiodun, the Police spokesperson in Niger State, confirmed the attack, describing it as a case of suspected armed robbery and culpable homicide. According to him, officers responded to a distress call but arrived after the attackers had fled the scene.
Abiodun added that tactical teams have been deployed to restore calm in the area, while the Commissioner of Police has ordered a full investigation and the arrest of those behind the attack.
This incident highlights the growing concerns about security in areas surrounding Nigerian universities, where many students reside in off-campus accommodations due to limited on-campus housing options.
