The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Northwest University Kano branch, has expressed shock and condemned the brutal killing of one of its members, Buhari Imam, who was murdered during a phone-snatching incident.
According to a statement signed by the branch chairman, Comrade Bashir Muhammad Bala, the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, June 11, 2025, around 3:30 a.m. in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
"Buhari Imam was viciously attacked with a knife and sustained severe stomach injuries," Bala stated. The victim was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), where he tragically succumbed to his injuries on Friday, June 13, 2025.
Dedicated Staff Member and Student
The late Imam was described as a dedicated member of the university's Maintenance Team who had played a vital role in the institution's recent 7th Congregation. He was also a final-year Higher National Diploma (HND) student at Kano State Polytechnic, studying Electrical Engineering.
The murder has plunged the university community into mourning, sparking grief and concern among colleagues, students, and friends of the late staff member.
Calls for Justice and Support
NASU has called for urgent intervention from the Kano State Government and security agencies. The union demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Imam's death and urged authorities to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible.
Additionally, NASU appealed to the government and university management to support the deceased's family, noting that Imam left behind an elderly mother and four siblings.
The incident highlights growing concerns about security in Kano, particularly around educational institutions, and raises questions about the safety of students and staff who often work or study during late hours.
