The father of Abdulwahab Abubakar, a 300-level Chemistry Education student at Ibrahim Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL) in Niger State, has expressed profound grief over the tragic loss of his son during a robbery attack.
"I got called at 3:30am on Sunday and I rushed to Lapai alone with a heavy heart. Within an hour, I got to the hospital where he was taken to. I met my son's lifeless body on the bed, brutally murdered. Kai, I broke down. His life was just cut short before it started," Abubakar lamented during an interview at his residence in Paiko, Paikoro local government area.
A Family in Mourning
Abdulwahab, the first son from Abubakar's third wife, was killed around 2:30 am on Sunday night at his lodge. The incident has left his family in profound shock and grief. His mother, 45-year-old Rabi Abubakar, was reportedly too distraught to speak about the loss.
"My family is really heartbroken. However, I accept what happened to us as the will of Allah because He allowed it to happen. There is nothing anyone can do when it's time," the grieving father stated.
Abdulwahab's step-sister, Zinatu Abubakar, and his cousin, Faiza Abdulkadir, also expressed their sorrow over his brutal killing, noting that his death has deeply affected the entire family, though they have resigned to divine will.
Calls for Enhanced Security
According to reports, this incident marks the fifth reported case of student killings at IBBUL, raising serious concerns about campus safety. Abubakar called on the Niger State government to take immediate action to enhance security measures at the university and other institutions across the state.
"You can't ask parents to send their wards to school when you can't provide security," he said. "We struggle and work hard to send our children to school, and to hear they're being killed is discouraging."
The bereaved father emphasized the need for concrete steps to ensure student safety, stating, "Let the Government rise up and stop this trend by taking concrete steps to enhance security measures and ensure safety in schools."
Abdulwahab was laid to rest on Monday at approximately 9:30 am in Paiko.
