The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, following recent security breaches that resulted in the loss of lives within the university community.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago issued the directive through a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Usman, emphasizing that the institution would remain closed until further notice.
Safety Concerns Prompt Closure
"The safety and security of all citizens, including students, remain a top priority for the government," the SSG stated in the official communication. "The Niger State government is deeply saddened by the recent incidents and measures are being taken to address the situation swiftly."
The statement urged the university community to remain vigilant, calm, and cooperative with authorities during the closure period. While specific details about the security incidents were not provided, the government confirmed that investigations are ongoing to bring perpetrators to justice.
This development comes amid reports of growing concerns from parents. In a related incident, the father of a student identified as Abdulwahab, who reportedly lost his life during the attacks, lamented that his son's future had been cut short.
Government's Commitment to Restore Order
The SSG assured the public that the state government is working diligently to restore order and ensure the safety of all citizens. "The government is resolute in its commitment to upholding law and order, as well as protecting the lives and property of all residents in Niger State," Usman added.
The closure of IBBU Lapai marks another challenging moment for the education sector in Niger State, which has been working to strengthen its educational institutions amid various socio-economic challenges.
No timeline has been provided for when the university might reopen, with authorities indicating that the situation will be continuously assessed before any decision is made.
