Former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and veteran journalist, Dele Momodu, has highlighted why former Vice President Atiku Abubakar represents an ideal democrat in Nigeria's political landscape.
According to Momodu, Atiku's democratic credentials date back to 1993 when he stepped down for Chief MKO Abiola during the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Presidential Primary in Jos, a move that demonstrated his commitment to party cohesion over personal ambition.
In a detailed article shared on his Facebook page, Momodu emphasized that Atiku has consistently played politics with decorum and ethical standards, noting that the former Vice President has never invested in thuggery or election rigging throughout his political career.
"Since 1993, when he stepped down for Chief Moshood Abiola at the SDP Presidential Primary in Jos, he has played politics with utmost decorum," Momodu stated. "Even when his arch-rival Babagana Kingibe was picked over him as running mate, he never worked against the party."
Momodu further highlighted Atiku's approach to political setbacks, saying: "He has never introduced violence to the game. Whenever he felt aggrieved, he simply moved on to other platforms in order to try his luck elsewhere. Never did he pull down the roof or set the house on fire."
The veteran journalist also recalled how Atiku eventually became Vice President under President Olusegun Obasanjo "in a most fatalistic manner," suggesting that patience and persistence have been hallmarks of Atiku's political journey.
Atiku Abubakar, a key figure in Nigeria's opposition coalition, has contested for the presidency multiple times without success. In the last presidential election, he was defeated by President Bola Tinubu. Political observers have speculated that the former Vice President might make another attempt in the 2027 presidential election.
Momodu's comments come at a time when Nigeria's political landscape continues to evolve, with opposition figures positioning themselves for future electoral contests.
