The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), Adolphus Wabara, has outlined conditions that would facilitate the return of party members who defected to other political parties, particularly those who joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
Speaking at the PDP's 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Thursday in Abuja, Wabara emphasized that delivering strong and inspiring leadership at the upcoming national convention would be crucial to attracting former members back to the party.
The former Senate President, who was represented at the event by former Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, highlighted the importance of resolving internal differences and electing credible leaders to reclaim PDP's position as Nigeria's leading opposition force.
"The Board of Trustees has always supported all organs of the party, especially the governors, in promoting unity and building consensus to move the party forward," Wabara stated.
He further noted that despite skepticism about whether the NEC meeting would take place, it has now become a constitutionally recognized event whose outcome will significantly influence the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
"This is a very important meeting that many believed would never happen. But here we are, meeting legally and constitutionally. The decisions we take today will send a strong message to those who are still skeptical," he added.
Wabara expressed optimism that a successful convention would not only facilitate the return of former members but also attract new individuals, including those who have never participated in partisan politics before.
The PDP has faced significant challenges in recent years, with many prominent members defecting to other political parties. The upcoming national convention is viewed as a critical opportunity for the party to reposition itself as a formidable opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political analysts suggest that the party's ability to present a united front and articulate a clear alternative vision for Nigeria will be essential in regaining public confidence and political relevance.
