The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has declared that the party is prepared to mount a strong challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Governor Mohammed made this declaration on Thursday during the opening session of the 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP held in Abuja.
"PDP is a party that has shown resilience. We are working behind the scene to ensure that we remain intact; to create a platform for Nigerians," he stated.
The Bauchi governor emphasized the unity within the party, adding, "The governors recognize the challenges faced by the NWC and they have shown that they are with us. We will give the APC a big fight in 2027. We are strong and working together."
Call for National Convention
Ahmed Makarfi, Secretary of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and former governor of Kaduna State, speaking on behalf of the board's chairman, stressed the importance of convening an elective national convention for the emergence of new national officers of the party.
"The outcome of the convention will determine the political landscape. We must work hard to ensure we survive. We must guard our utterances in order not to complicate the issues," Makarfi advised.
He expressed optimism that following the emergence of a new leadership, many who had left the PDP would return to the party. "At the end of the tunnel, there will be light. PDP will come back," he affirmed.
Senate Minority Weighs In
Senator Abba Moro, the Senate Minority Leader (PDP, Benue South), described the meeting as designed to propel the PDP to the next level, noting that the party has been working to maintain its status as "one big family since 1999."
Addressing the issue of defections from PDP to APC, particularly among senators, Moro remarked, "Some people are in politics by accident, they gravitate from one party to another for survival."
He assured that the remaining PDP senators would make concerted efforts to help the party regain its strength ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The 101st NEC meeting comes at a critical time for the opposition party as it seeks to reorganize and strengthen its position in Nigeria's political landscape following setbacks in recent elections.
